The Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special is one of the most anticipated holiday events of the year. The reunion airs on January 1, only on HBO Max, but until we can watch it, we have gathered some spoilers for our readers about what is to come!
You can bet that the Harry Potter cast wouldn’t reunite without addressing Emma Watson’s crush on co-star Tom Felton. For Watson, she fell for Felton “when [he had] drawn [God as] a girl with a backward cap on a skateboard.” Ever the feminist, Watson most certainly approved, and she couldn’t keep her eyes off of him ever since. “I used to come in every day and look for his number on the call sheet,” she says, “if his name was on the call sheet, it was an extra exciting day.” The pair continued to hang out past shooting the films (which was ever so wonderfully documented through Instagram and Twitter posts.)
However, filming eight movies over ten years was not always sunshine and rainbows. Watson previously stated that she almost left the films after the third installment because she wanted to focus on her education. Similarly, Rupert Grint reveals in the reunion that he almost left the franchise multiple times. He admits that he often “contemplate[ed] what life would be like if [he] called it a day.” One of the reasons why the Harry Potter movies are so well-done is the fact that the same actors play the same characters for over a decade. One of the few examples of a major acting switch in the series was when Michael Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore because Richard Harris had passed. Imagine if we had gotten a different Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley mid-way through the series?
