The first official images from The Wheel of Time television adaptation are here! Entertainment Weekly is the original source for the photos, which were released on August 18th. According to EW, over two years ago Jeff Bezos gave the Prime Video team the challenge of creating a series that could rival HBO’s Game of Thrones. Their answer? An adaptation of Robert Jordan’s fifteen-book epic fantasy saga, written from 1990 to 2013 (completed by author Brandon Sanderson after Jordan passed away).
Amazon and EW published several photos from the set, which you can view for yourself below.
The first depicts seven members of the cast in character. According to Nerdist, they are: “Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoë Robins), Mat Cauthon (Barney Harris), Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henny), Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), and Rand al’ Thor (Josha Stradowski)” (from left to right).
The next photo shows Rand and Egwene in conversation on a hillside.
The third photo depicts the False Dragon Logain (Álvaro Morte) bound in a cage.
Finally, the last image shows Lan and Moiraine in Shadar Logoth, an important location in The Wheel of Time. It was once a prosperous city, but ruined itself with evil during previous wars, according to Nerdist.
According to Collider, the Wheel of Time adaptation is already renewed for a second season. However, Amazon has not yet released a trailer for season one. Regardless, the first season is expected to premiere on Prime Video in November 2021.
If you’re unfamiliar with The Wheel of Time, EW states the series’ showrunner Rafe Judkins claims the saga is “the perfect bridge” between J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Judkins admires The Wheel of Time as he views it as one of the first fantasy sagas to explore both the political and cultural worlds of its characters and utilize multiple point-of-view chapters.
Here is an official synopsis for The Wheel of Time as previously included by Collider: “Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine, a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.”
