Coraline, by Neil Gaiman, follows a little girl named, well, Coraline. Coraline and her parents have just moved into a new home—a house that is broken into separate apartments that different residents can live in. Just like many children who go through such a move, Coraline is not pleased that she had to leave her old home and friends behind. Not to mention that her parents are trying to balance their work, the move, and Coraline, but they aren’t really doing so with any luck.
While she is exploring her family’s new home, Coraline discovers a door that has been papered over and sealed off. She manages to open the door, and she is transported into a parallel world where she had an other-mother and an other-father. While they are ready to lavish Coraline with all the gifts and attention that she could desire, there is something… off about them. And when it becomes clear that what they have to offer is conditional, the situation takes a turn for the worse, and Coraline must work to rescue her parents from her other-mother.
And now, the film that was inspired by Neil Gaiman’s book will be turning 15 on August 24th. And to celebrate Coraline turning 15, several movie theaters will be showing the film for one day.
