Yesterday, the teaser trailer for the new BBC Doctor Who series was revealed during the Doctor Who panel for Comic-Con@Home. Winter is Coming reports that Jodie Whitaker will return as the Doctor for Series 13. Her companions are Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Dan (John Bishop). Also starring in the series is Jacob Anderson (AKA Raleigh Ritchie), who played the loyal, fierce, and adept Unsullied leader Grey Worm in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Anderson’s Doctor Who character is named Vinder, who will reportedly have his own ship. As a Doctor Who fan himself, Anderson did not hold back in expressing his excitement for his upcoming role. According to Winter is Coming, during the panel, Anderson stated, “I get to play one of my favorite people I’ve ever played…This is a real-life childhood dream.” He also retweeted a post from the Doctor Who Twitter account, admitting, “Seriously, this has been the most fun I have maybe ever had.” According to the official casting announcement from BBC, Anderson said:
“The Doctor has been a part of my life forever, from watching and rewatching the serials on VHS as a kid and being terrified, to unexpectedly finding my eyes watering when the Tenth Doctor said ‘I don’t want to go’, I always wanted to live in the Whoniverse.”
Series 13 will have one major difference from previous Doctor Who series, reports Deadline. This year’s series will be a singular story. The reason is due to the challenges imposed on the shooting schedule brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The series will also have only eight episodes.
Executive producer and showrunner Chris Chibnall stated the team ultimately decided to “do the biggest” and “most ambitious thing” they’ve ever done before with Series 13. Deadline reported Chibnall believed that COVID circumstances left the crew with two options. Instead of shooting in one small room with small monsters, Chibnall says they opted to “throw down the gauntlet and do the biggest story we’ve ever done” adding, “we’re going to go to all kinds of different places, we’re going to have all kinds of characters and monsters, and it’s all going to be part of a bigger whole.”
There is no specific release date yet for Doctor Who Season 13. However, it is expected to premiere sometime later this year.
