Yes, you read that right, broadway. Along with a slew of prequel projects, a live stage show based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world is also currently in development.
The play is being produced by Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, and it will follow a story written by Martin. The team hopes to launch productions in New York City, London’s West End, and Australia with the first show expected to premiere sometime in 2023.

The play will for the first time take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event that previously was shrouded with mystery. Featuring many of the most iconic and well-known characters from the series, the production will board a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing prophecy, in the process revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now.
The stage show will depict The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, a pivotal moment in Westeros history that took place 16 years before the events of Game of Thrones. At the end of the competition, a married Prince Rhaegar Targaryen crowned Lyanna Stark, who was betrothed to Robert Baratheon, his queen of love and beauty. This then led to Prince Rhaegar allegedly abducting Lyanna, which ultimately resulted in Robert’s Rebellion and the end of the Targaryen rule over the Seven Kingdoms.
One element that is sure to entice fans is that the play will bring back several beloved characters from Game of Thrones for the first time since the series concluded in 2019. According to Martin’s books, other attendees of the event besides Rhaegar and Lyanna include younger versions of Ned Stark, Jaime Lannister, Robert Baratheon, and Prince Oberyn Martell.
“The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace,” Martin said in a statement after the news broke. “Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring. It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice & Fire… and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.”
