Say it ain’t so! Chris Hemsworth was allegedly almost passed over for the role of Thor because of one of his pre-Marvel jobs. Before he was widely recognized as the God of Thunder, Hemsworth had several small roles in Australian television projects including a stint on Dancing with the Stars Australia. No, I’m not kidding. There’s proof.
In an interview with Pop Culture, Derek Hough, a former professional dancer and current judge on the U.S. version of Dancing with the Stars, revealed Hemsworth dancing with rhinestones and a spray tan almost lost him his Marvel role. Hough explained:
Chris Hemsworth almost lost his role as Thor because he was on Dancing with the Stars in Australia. He was on Dancing with the Stars in Australia, and he’s dancing the samba and they literally cast him – or they were gonna cast him – and I think people called and said, ‘Yo have you seen him dancing the Samba? This cannot be our Thor.’

I don’t know about you, but I honestly can’t picture an alternate reality were my favorite hammer-wielding hero is played by someone other than Hemsworth. I mean if I was a Marvel executive, I would see Hemsworth’s fancy footwork as a plus. Actors often say learning fight choreography is like learning a dance, so seeing that the Australian actor was light on his feet would have been an indicator that he would take to stunt training quite well. Also, who are Hough’s Marvel sources? I would like access to those secrets as well, please!
Luckily, the samba wasn’t detrimental to Hemsworth’s role in the MCU as he is now one of the few original Avengers still going strong. His latest outing as the God of Thunder will be the fourth film in his solo Thor series, Thor: Love and Thunder, which will hit theaters on May 6, 2022. Here’s hoping director Taika Waititi finds a way to incorporate a highly choreographed dance number into the film. I’m speaking it into existence.
