The late Octavia Butler’s book, Fledgling is being turned into an HBO script. Many talented writers and producers have been selected including Lovecraft Country’s writers and Sonya Winton-Odamtten and Jonathan I. Kidd. Among the executive producers for the book-to-screen adaptation is Issa Rae and J.J. Abrams. The pilot is currently being developed by Warner Bros. Television. Others involved with the production are Kidd and Winton-Odamtten.
They have now signed a four-year deal with HBO which includes this series. They’re also producing Say Their Names, a limited series about journalist and activist Margaret Prescod’s search to solve the Grim Sleeper murders of Los Angeles.
Fledgling is about a 53-year-old vampire who appears much younger. Unlike many other books in this genre, Butler’s book contains commentary on racism, sexism, honor, family, and much much more.
Butler is a distinguished science fiction author. Her books have won awards such as the Nebula Award and Hugo Award. In 1995, she became the first science-fiction author to win a McArthur Fellowship. As such, she is well respected and decorated as an author. Readers and critics everywhere have loved her work since the mid-seventies.
We’re excited to see what will result from this collaboration.
