On Wednesday, Variety announced that Michaela Coel has officially joined the cast of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the 2018 Black Panther film. Information regarding who Coel will portray in the movie is not yet available.
Filming for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever started last month in Atlanta. According to The Hollywood Reporter, many members of the original cast are expected to return. These stars include Danai Gurira (Okoye), Daniel Kaluuya (W’Kabi), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), and Winston Duke (M’Baku).
Since Chadwick Boseman, who played the titular character, passed away from colon cancer last year, director Ryan Coogler needed to rework the original script. Nyong’o believes “the way which [Coogler] has reshaped the second movie is so respectful of the loss we’ve all experienced as a cast and as a world.”
In 2020, Coel received four Emmy nominations for the HBO series I May Destroy You. In addition to directing and producing the series, Coel starred in the show as the character Arabella. She’s also appeared in Black Mirror, Chewing Gum, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, according to Variety.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is currently expected to be released on July 8, 2022.
