On the eve of Disney’s Snow White premiere, we’re rating 5 Snow White live-version adaptations to see if they’ll be on our rewatch list.
Mirror Mirror
This 2012 remake has Lilly Collins playing Snow White and the amazing Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Full of humor and fantasy, this introduces a feminist twist to the tale, as well as explores the Queen’s effect on her subjects and not just her family. With a Reverse Makeover scene turning Snow White from a princess to a warrior, the found family she has in the dwarves, and the hilarious cat-and-mouse game between the prince and the Queen, this is a must rewatch. 5/5
Snow White And The Huntsman
Kristen Stewart plays the titular character of Snow White in this 2012 remake. The rest of the cast includes stars like Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. Despite their talents, and the high level of fantasy in the story, the movie as a whole is forgettable. It also features a frankly bewildering love triangle between Snow White, her childhood friend, and the huntsman. 2/5
The Huntsman: Winter’s War
This 2016 film somehow serves as both prequel and sequel to Snow White And The Huntsman. It gives a cool backstory to the Evil Queen with Emily Blunt playing the role of her younger sister Freya, and has an amazing soundtrack and costume design. On the whole, a fun time but not something to watch more than once. 3/5
Sydney White
Released in 2007, this is a Modern Snow White AU featuring protagonist Sydney White(played by Amanda Bynes) who tries joining her late mother’s college sorority. Instead of finding her sisterhood, she gets kicked out and joins the ‘dorky’ clique of the college. The movie ends with her taking down the image-obsessed sorority president and encouraging her fellow students to embrace their differences. 4/5
Grimm’s Snow White
A 2012 live-action remake of the classic. When the King is killed by ferocious reptile beasts, his Queen takes control of the kingdom. She tries to kill her beautiful stepdaughter Snow, but she escapes into the enchanted forest. Super basic storyline with no new additions or unique points. 3/5
