Poetry is a work of art. There’s raw emotion and passion anywhere you look. And while everything is ultimately up to a reader’s interpretation, there’s usually a general idea that flows throughout the poem. Whether it be something lighthearted, meaningful, or even dark, it’s amazing to see how poets speak their minds in ways we couldn’t have imagined.
Of course, there’s a thousand different ways to say ‘I love you’, but these following lines truly took it to the next level, marking them the most romantic in poetry.
“I found a night’s sky full of stars / In your cinematic eyes / And heard a symphony / In your laughter” –– Justin Wetch, “Bending the Universe”
“If I lost you, / the air wouldn’t move, nor the tree grow” –– Marvin Bell, “To Dorothy”
“I love thee with the breath, / Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, / I shall but love thee better after death” –– Elizabeth Barrett Browning, “How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)”
“You walked in like the light / From every sun that rose” –– Christie Ann Reynolds, “I Want The Certainty of Love In Another Language”
“i want / no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)” –– e.e. Cummings, “[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in]”
“loving you is / a long river running” –– Sonia Sanchez, “Haiku [for you]”
“It is so easy now to see gravity at work in your face / Easy to understand time, that dark process / To accept it as a beautiful process, your face” –– Peter Gizzi, “Lines Depicting Simple Happiness”
“It is unspeakable. / It is everlasting. / It is for keeps” –– Joy Hargo, “For Keeps”
“Tonight I lingered over your name, / the delicate assembly of vowels / a voice inside my head” –– Naomi Shihab Nye, “San Antonio”
