Auditions for the lead role of the upcoming HBO Max Batgirl movie are rapidly underway! According to Variety, Isabela Merced (Day of the Solado) and Zoey Deutch (Why Him?) have already undergone testing for the part of Barbara Gordon (aka Batgirl), or will soon test for the role. Haley Lu Richardson (Five Feet Apart) and Leslie Grace (In the Heights) are also deemed as “top contenders” for the titular role, although certain reports suggest Richardson may have backed out early, Deadline reported.
These actresses are likely not the only ones who are in the running to play Batgirl. Variety reports there is a good chance other names of possible actresses may also appear throughout this testing process.
Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah will team up again to direct the film. The two have previously worked together on Bad Boys For Life. Batgirl’s screenplay was written by Christina Hodson (The Flash). Kristin Burr will produce the film.
According to Variety, Batgirl is an attempt by HBO Max to attract DC fans to the streaming giant, as the platform has noticed the growing interest in other superhero shows (like WandaVision, Loki, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+). Other DC films currently in progress are The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and the Aquaman sequel with Jason Momoa. Next month The Suicide Squad with Margot Robbie, John Cena, and Sylvester Stallone will hit theaters.
