It looks like Dumbledore’s secrets aren’t going to remain secret much longer! The teaser trailer has officially dropped and the full trailer is being released on Monday, in perfect conjunction with the HBO Max 20th Anniversary of Harry Potter, which also had a teaser trailer drop recently.
It makes perfect sense for the Fantastic Beasts franchise to capitalize on Harry Potter‘s success and vice versa. The Fantastic Beasts franchise is literally a prequel spin-off of the original Harry Potter series and the hype surrounding the reunion of the beloved Harry Potter characters is bound to increase the anticipation for the Fantastic Beasts series. At any rate, Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts fans rejoice—for there will be plenty of wizarding world content coming in 2022.
We last left the Fantastic Beasts franchise with Queenie Goldstein going with the dark wizard, Grindelwald, Leta Lestrange sacrificing her life so that the others could escape, and Credence’s true identity as Aurelius Dumbledore, Albus’ long-lost brother. Drama!
In the teaser trailer, fans got our first glimpse of Mad’s Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald, who replaced Johnny Depp, who played Grindelwald in the first two movies. While we obviously haven’t seen a lot of Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald, in an interview last year, he said, “There has to be a bridge between what Johnny did and what I’m going to do. And at the same time, I also have to make it my own. But also, we have to find a few links [to the previous version of the character] and some bridges, so it doesn’t completely detach from what he’s already masterfully achieved.”
It’s not always easy when an actor is replaced halfway through a franchise, but it has been done before, even in Harry Potter. The Prisoner of Azkaban onwards, Michael Gambon replaced Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore, due to Harris’ unfortunate death. While it is not always easy to step into the shoes of another actor, both Gambon and Harris did amazing jobs and fans are definitely looking forward to seeing what Mikkelsen will bring to the table.
The full trailer of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will drop on Monday. Stay tuned to see what will happen and post your predictions of what will happen in the comments!
