The premiere date for Netflix’s upcoming animated film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, is only a few weeks away. According to ComicBook and Netflix, the anime origin film is centered around Vesemir (voiced by Theo James), the mentor to Geralt of Rivia from the original Witcher series. Vesemir decided to become a Witcher in order to escape his life of poverty, earning money for slaying monsters. However, “when a new menace arises, he must face the demons of his past.”

Netflix treated Witcher fans with a new trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf early this morning, reports ComicBook. In the trailer, viewers can see a young Vesemir hunting monsters with admirable skill and finesse. The trailer also provides more insight into the Trial of the Grasses. Perhaps the most exciting feature in the new trailer is when Vesemir is shown leading an army of Witchers, all of whom appear prepared for a battle. ComicBook suggests this could be the fall of Kaer Morhen.

Lauren S. Hissrich is serving as showrunner, with Beau DeMayo writing alongside Studio Mir. Nightmare of the Wolf is deemed canon in regards to the events of the original Witcher series. While some information is sourced from the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, there are also some new features as well.

DeMayo stated, “The show is… It’s funny because it’s such a unique property. Because the show is based on the books and not the game. It’s been an interesting thing to control that perspective, in terms of, we were looking at the books, always looking at the books. And there’s always going to be some similarities because they’re all coming from the same mothership, basically.”

He adds, “But the anime itself, for as much as I can say about it, because as you know, Netflix, as well,” DeMayo said. “It is definitely something that is in canon with our live-action series.”
