Earlier today, it was confirmed that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who has starred in two feature films and another three Marvel Cinematic Universe movies (Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame) will be continuing with his role as Peter Parker / Spider-Man for another Spider-Man trilogy all with Marvel.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is the first of the MCU characters to get a second trilogy after his original trilogy ended. Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor all got their original trilogy, with Chris Hemsworth getting a fourth Thor film, called Thor: Love and Thunder. While all three of these original Avengers admittedly had larger roles than Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the films where they were not the main characters – for example, Robert Downey Jr played a huge role in all the Avengers films, Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming – Tom Holland is the first to get a sequel trilogy based on his character.

It is not surprising that Marvel would choose to keep Tom Holland around. Last night with the online pre-sale tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home being released, the internet broke – literally. Tickets are being sold on eBay as expensive as tens of thousands of dollars.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is arguably the most anticipated film since Avengers: Endgame. Not only does it continue the multiverse that was established in Loki, but it also features the return of fan favourite actors from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy and the Marc Webb Spider-Man duology. So far, we will most definitely be getting the return of Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius / Doc Ock from the Sam Raimi series and Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon / Electro from the Marc Webb series, albeit with a different appearance.

While it is hinted that Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans will be returning as Norman Osborn / Green Goblin, Flint Marko / Sandman and Curt Connors / Lizard respectively, their appearances are yet to be confirmed by visual evidence (Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx’s appearances have been confirmed in the trailers that have been released). There are also rumours that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be returning as alternate timeline versions of Peter Parker / Spider-Man, but those rumours are most definitely rumours.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is one of the younger cast in the Marvel franchise. The majority of the cast are adults or play adults; Tom Holland is portraying a high schooler. This is naturally going to change with the introduction of Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel, but the majority of the actors and the characters they portray are adults. This opens up a lot of possibilities for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who has already portrayed the part of the “apprentice” under Iron Man, and subsequently under Doctor Strange (in the upcoming film). It will be interesting to see how the films choose to portray him as a leader in the upcoming trilogy, seeing as that is most likely the path that the films will take him down.
