Here are some ways you can support the BLM movement, by reading publications that center around Black issues.
1) Ebony
With a circulation of over one million, Ebony is a highly renowned publication that highlights achievements from influential black people. Their content also includes stories about fashion, entertainment, news, and politics. Previous covers include photos of Michelle Obama, Beyonce, Tyler Perry, Diana Ross, and Lena Horne. Ebony is celebrating its 75th birthday in 2020, serving its community since 1945!
2) Fader
Founded in 1999, this contemporary magazine covers all aspects of music, with an emphasis on rap and hip hop. It also frequently reports about black culture. It also has its own video channel, Fader TV, and its personal shop where you can buy issues, music, and various paraphernalia. Previous issues include cover photos of Serena Williams, SZA, Drake, Tyler the Creator, and Erykah Badu. Fun fact: It was the first magazine to be hosted on iTunes!
3) Essence
First published in 1970, and with an audience of over 20 million, this publication is targeted towards African American women specifically. It is known for its activism work, especially for covering the topics of misogyny in hip hop culture. It also reports on lifestyle, fashion, and beauty topics. Previous issues include cover photos of Chadwick Boseman, Michelle Obama, Janet Jackson, and Chris Rock. Essence also hosts the nation’s largest gathering of African American musical talent, the Essence festival.
4) The Crisis
This legendary magazine is the official magazine for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, otherwise known as the NAACP. One of its founders was the highly influential historian and civil rights activist W.E.B Du Bois. It frequently covers subjects in social justice in politics, as well as history and arts and culture. Historically, it is known for its artistic and literary impact on the Harlem Renaissance. It has been in circulation since 1910, making it the longest-running publication on our list!
5) Jet
With a circulation of over 1 million, Jet is a sister company to Ebony magazine. Based in Chicago, the publication is known for its coverage of the Civil Rights Movement, reporting on Emmet Till, The Montgomery Bus Boycott, and Martin Luther King Jr. They also frequently cover entertainment, fashion, and health and fitness. Previous issues include covers of Janet Jackson, Eartha Kitt, Octavia Spencer, and Michael B Jordan.
