Teenagers will do as teenagers do: Be filled with a lot of hormones, angst, and anger. And Harry Potter himself is not exempt from those feelings. In The Order of the Phoenix we see fifteen-year-old Harry at the pinnacle of being a teenager, and he lashes out. A lot.
Whether he’s amongst his friends, or he’s entrenched in serious adult drama, J. K. Rowling makes it a point to showcase his teenage angst throughout the fifth book in what we like to call “Capslock Harry.” Here are six of the best “Capslock Harry” moments!
1. Harry to Ron and Hermione, Chapter Four
SO YOU HAVEN’T BEEN IN THE MEETINGS, BIG DEAL! YOU’VE STILL BEEN HERE, HAVEN’T YOU? YOU’VE STILL BEEN TOGETHER! ME, I’VE BEEN STUCK AT THE DURSLEYS’ FOR A MONTH! WHO SAVED BOTH YOUR SKINS FROM THE DEMENTORS?….WHO HAD TO GET PAST DRAGONS AND SPHINXES AND EVERY OTHER FOUL THING LAST YEAR? WHO SAW HIM COME BACK? WHO HAD TO ESCAPE FROM HIM? ME!….BUT WHY SHOULD I KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON? WHY SHOULD ANYONE BOTHER TO TELL ME WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?….CAN’T’VE WANTED TO THAT MUCH, CAN YOU, OR YOU’D HAVE SENT ME AN OWL, BUT DUMBLEDORE MADE YOU SWEARE—….FOUR WEEKS I’VE BEEN STUCK IN PRIVET DRIVE, NICKING PAPERS OUT OF BINS TO TRY AND FIND OUT WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON—….I SUPPOSE YOU’VE BEEN HAVING A REAL LAUGH, HAVEN’T YOU, ALL HOLED UP HERE TOGETHER—
2. Harry to Peeves the Poltergeist, Chapter Twelve
I said, leave me ALONE!….SHUT UP!
3. Harry to Ron and Hermione, Chapter Thirty-two
IF YOU THINK I’M JUST GOING TO ACT LIKE I HAVEN’T SEEN—….WELL, I EXPECTED HE’D SAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT IF HE KNEW WHAT I’D JUST—
4. Harry to Lupin in regards to Bellatrix, Chapter Thirty-six
SHE KILLED SIRIUS!….SHE KILLED HIM—I’LL KILL HER!
5. Harry to Dumbledore, Chapter Thirty-seven
THEN—I—DON’T—WANT—TO—BE—HUMAN!….I DON’T CARE!….I’VE HAD ENOUGH, I’VE SEEN ENOUGH, I WANT OUT, I WANT IT TO END, I DON’T CARE ANYMORE—….I—DON’T!….YOU DON’T KNOW HOW I FEEL! YOU—STANDING THERE—YOU—….Do you—do you think I want to—do—you think I give a—I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU’VE GOT TO SAY!….I don’t want to hear anything you’ve got to say!
6. Harry to Kreacher the House Elf, Chapter Thirty-seven
DON’T TALK ABOUT SIRIUS LIKE THAT!
So there you have it. After all, being the Boy Who Lived combined with being a teenager isn’t the easiest of jobs.
