When Cherry received his award, he dedicated his book to the late Kobe Bryant. The author also mentioned why HAIR LOVE was made. It was made to show more representation in animated movies. Cherry also stated, “We wanted to normalize black hair.”

It’s important, especially in Black History month to celebrate books like these. Kids of color from a young age should be taught that their hair is beautiful. And even though hair is just hair to some, to many its so much more than that. Curly, kinky, straight, dyed or natural; all hair should be celebrated.
