Christina Aguilera released the music video for her Mulan ballad, Loyal Brave True, in a nostalgic whirlwind earlier today.

After numerous delays, the live-action film has finally arrived on Disney+, paying homage to the classic Disney animation based on the ancient Chinese folktale the Ballad of Mulan (木辞).

Aguilera’s career flourished upon her release of Reflection for the original film in 1998. She recalled her experience auditioning for the soundtrack.

I auditioned for the song Reflection in my bathroom to a Whitney Houston song with a tape recorder. I got my record deal in the same week and to now do a re-imagined version of Reflection, it’s just such an amazing thing.

Her most recent album, Liberation, was released in 2018 after a six-year hiatus and features several artists such as Demi Lovato, Ty Dolla Sign, and 2 Chainz. It debuted at number three on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, her first album to achieve the feat since Bionic. Last year, Aguilera also wrote and performed a song for the animated Addams Family movie.

Throughout the last couple of decades, Mulan has remained a movie that is dear to the singer’s heart. In a 1998 interview, she divulged why she admired the character.

The best thing about singing the part of a great heroine such as Mulan is that I think she is a really great role model because she goes after what she wants with such bravery. She didn’t let any limitations hold her back and succeeded in the end.
