Creepshow is a 1982 horror comedy anthology movie directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King. Consisting of five short films; “Father’s Day”, “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill”, “Something to Tide You Over”, “The Crate” and “They’re Creeping Up on You!”, Creepshow is King’s screenwriting debut, and the beginning of his legacy on the silver screen, one that his son, Joe Hill, can continue. Although two adaptations of King’s work predate Creepshow – director Brian DePalma’s Carrie and director Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining – King had no active part in their creations.
However, not only did King write for Creepshow, he also made an appearance in “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” as a dimwitted hillbilly who touches a meteorite that lands on his property which covers him with an alien plant growth until he blows his own head off with a shotgun. Quite brutal, huh? But what’s even more intriguing is that Joe Hill also makes an appearance as a young boy named Billy who tortures his abusive father with a voodoo doll he found included in a horror comic.
The Creepshow reboot, which is available to watch on the streaming service Shudder, is made up of individual episodes each written by a different horror author, including Josh Malerman, Joe Lansdale, Stephen King himself, and of course, Joe Hill. While the second season of Shudder’s Creepshow has unfortunately been delayed thanks to the current pandemic halting all film and TV production, for Joe to continue his father’s delightfully awkward acting legacy (if you don’t believe me, check out how many of his own miniseries’ he had a cameo in) he should make an appearance in Creepshow season two!
