Hold onto your hats, nineties fans. This is a wild one. Remember Barney the Dinosaur? That cuddly, cute dinosaur who you probably haven’t given a second thought to beyond nostalgia. Well, Barney is coming back with a vengeance! According to Hypebeast Barney the Dinosaur is the latest property to be given the green light for a live action film. The purple T Rex is coming to the big screen, with Get Out and Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya set to produce the film through his company 59%.

In collaboration with Mattel, 59% is all set to give Barney his new lease on life. On the film, Kaluuya was quoted saying:
Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.

Mattel said this new film will be something of a new spin on the old show, giving Barney a reboot for the new generation. On the project, Mattel said:
Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations. The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.
It’ll be interesting to see what they mean by all this. Will Barney be given a gritty, realistic take or show up as the same old lovable dinosaur he’s always been? We’ll have to see in 2020, but what do you think of this admittedly odd project?
