The woman who launched one of the biggest franchises of the late 2000s is dipping her toe back into the fantasy world with another adaptation. Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Twilight, is set to direct the big screen adaptation of Heathen.
Based on the comic series of the same name, it centers around Ayida, a female viking warrior who declares a one-woman war against the god Odin after witnessing widespread injustice towards women during the mythological era.
The series has become critically acclaimed for its feminist take on Norse mythology. The producer of the film version, Adrian Askareih, noted this unique take on traditional stories as the reason for wanting to bring the story to the big screen:
“Natasha has created an instant classic which smartly ties into the current socio-political zeitgeist while being a first-rate, timeless adventure story. Not only is it a great passion of ours to bring Heathen to the big screen, but also a true honor.”
