Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have made their love for the acclaimed Nickelodeon show clear; so much so that Avatar has dominated the #1 and #2 spots for numerous days. As an OG fan of the show, seeing all this love, support and (much deserved) attention makes me want to tear bend if I’m being honest.
However, let’s not get distracted by the amazing Avatar memes! It was announced back in September 2018, that Netflix along with Avatar’s co-creators was going to make a live-action remake of the series.With the lack of details most people (besides the relentless fandom) forgot; it wasn ‘t until the beloved cartoon joined Netflix did it jogged the general public’s memory. So let’s recap what we know so far and do what stans do best: speculate online.
We know Nickelodeon created a partnership with Netflix to create competition for rivals like Disney Plus. Utilizing Netflix as a platform, the goal was pushing out the OG shows we grew up on plus original content. So Avatar showing up now isn’t a coincidence, sorry Avatar Roku wasn’t listening to your pleas. Seeing how enthusiastic new and old fans greeted the original cartoon, will only benefit the live-action series. We know that Netflix is supposed to do all three seasons, but who knows maybe they’ll split each in half? The universe of Aang is entertaining enough for a 45 minute show and I wouldn’t mind six seasons. Double dose of Zuko? Yes please.
Now originally the live-action series was supposed to debut later this year; but given the current state of Hollywood expect a delay Zutara fans. But don’t fret, you should rest easy with knowing this: The original co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are behind the project. Equally important, the masterminds has been working.

We’re moving into a new office space, transitioning into the next phase of production. Our core team is growing. We’re writing, planning, and testing. Though there’s plenty that’s new for us in this live action process, we’ve been on this long rollercoaster ride twice before and a lot of the climbs and twists and turns feel familiar. Right now, everything seems slow, and we’re itching to speed up; before we know it, everything will be moving too fast and happening all at once. For those who are eager to see this new series and are asking if we have a trailer yet: thank you for your enthusiasm, sincerely, but you wouldn’t want to see a version of this series that was made within 9 months. Too much Hollywood fare is fast-tracked and the results speak for themselves. Thankfully for us and this series, Netflix is committed to doing it right.
Although we’re salvitaing for a teaser trailer, let’s not rush the masters. We know what can happen when you rush an Avatar project. Allow that movie to serve as a crash course on what not to do. Let’s be ecstatic that Michael and Bryan are not only producers, but committed. So let’s be patient, even if that means not getting anything until 2021 (sobs). Hopefully the attention Avatar is getting will allow The Legend of Korra will be added next, and maybe one day it’ll get it’s own live-action remake (crosses my fingers).
