A 7-year-old girl in Cornwall, England has made international headlines after pulling a four-foot sword out of the same lake into which King Arthur’s Excalibur is said to have been thrown.
Matilda Jones was swimming in Dozmary Pool in Bodmin Moor, Cornwall on Tuesday when she caught sight of the sword glinting beneath the water, The Sheffield Star reported.

Matilda’s father said, “I told her not to be silly and it was probably a bit of fencing, but when I looked down I realized it was a sword. It was just there laying flat on the bottom of the lake.”
According to legend, Excalibur was presented to King Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. The magic sword can only be possessed by the rightful ruler of Great Britain. After receiving a fatal wound, King Arthur ordered the sword to be tossed back into the lake, where it was caught by the Lady of the Lake.

Could young Matilda be the rightful ruler of Great Britain? It’s unlikely, says her father, who estimates the sword is twenty to thirty years old, and most likely a discarded movie prop.
We’re not convinced, however. She looks like a natural…
