Children’s author Cressida Cowell has won over the hearts of many with her How To Train Your Dragon book series, which was adapted into an award winning film franchise of the same name. She will continue to bring the joy of reading to children everywhere with her new title as Waterstones children’s laureate.
Succeeding the previous laureate Lauren Child, Cowell will take on the role of inspiring children to read and write more. She received the honor at the Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London, where she outlined her plans to encourage youth to read more.
Cowell debut a 10-point “to-do” list of what she wants to do as laureate. Among these things, she hopes to increase access to new books and libraries for schools, as well as giving children a set amount of time each day to be creative.
Cowell’s ultimate goal is to make reading and writing accessible to everyone:
“Books and reading are magic and this magic must be available to absolutely everyone.”
