Author Margaret Atwood is a well-accomplished fiction writer.  But she’s perhaps even better known for being exceptionally prolific and diverse in her creative output.  Taking into account that she has novels, short stories, poems, essays, and comics to her credit, it might be no surprise that she’s adding another entry to her list of accomplishments. She recently announced a three-part graphic novel series set for release by Dark Horse Comics in autumn 2016.

The series, as its title Angel Catbird suggests, is about a superhero who is a cat-bird hybrid.  In a statement to The Guardian, Atwood explains that she has “concocted a superhero who is part cat, part bird. Due to some spilled genetic Super-Splicer, our hero got tangled up with both a cat and an owl; hence his fur and feathers, and his identity problems.”  Though the plotline for Angel Catbird seems like the classic superhero setup, given Atwood’s reputation for penetrating, emotionally resonant fiction, it seems likely that Angel Catbird’s identity problems will have a strong focus alongside his typical crime-fighting.

As previously mentioned, Atwood has written short comics in the past, some of which can be found on her website. However, for Angel Catbird, the writer is working with illustrator Johnnie Christmas.

Are you excited for Atwood to enter the world of graphic novels?
