My fellow Suki stans today is a happy day! The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is growing; Suki the beloved leader of the Kyoshi warriors is getting her own standalone novel. Dark Horse’s prior stand alone graphic novel decisions showcase a commitment to showing female leads, such as their novels Katara and the Pirate’s Silver and Toph Beifong’s Metal Bending Academy. So not only is Suki Alone highlighting another great female lead, but it’s in some great company. Let’s discuss what we know about our favorite Kyoshi warrior!
Suki Alone will show readers Suki’s time at the Boiling Rock in the Fire Nation during the events of the critically acclaimed show. Suki attempts to build a community among the prisoners there, but first needs to prove she is trustworthy. Faith Erin Hicks, who wrote all three novels said, “This stand alone story is focused on Suki during her time at Boiling Rock Prison. It’s very different from the other 2 stand alone comics, filled with emotion & heartbreak. I love it!”
I mean if there’s a chance I get to see Avatar Kyoshi drawn beautifully, it’s a win right? OG fans of Avatar and The Legend of Korra may get serious deja vu from the title. From Avatar, we had the episode “Zuko Alone” and in Korra there was “Korra Alone;” essentially episodes for serious character reflection without their supporting characters.
