Renowned alternative musician and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy plotted to mess with his bandmates. When he discovered that bassist Chris Wolstenhome and drummer Dominic Howard despised the Harry Potter franchise, he got a magical idea—to hide a sneaky HP reference in the latest album, Simulation Theory. The best part? Bellamy says that “hardly anyone has noticed.”

On the track ‘Propaganda,’ Bellamy sneaks in the reference: “you ate my soul like a death eater.” Any fan will catch the clear nod to Voldemort’s followers, the Death Eaters, who serve the Dark Lord in his quest to ‘purify’ the wizarding world. Since Wolstenhome and Howard dislike the franchise, Bellamy feels smugly certain that they haven’t found the reference. He brags: “I love it.”

Fans of the band and the book should note that Bellamy didn’t only include the lyric to torment his bandmates. He acknowledges his audience: “it was to recognize the generation who grew up with ‘Harry Potter’, and the fantastic and magical things that have been a bit lost these last few years.” Bellamy also feels that the elements of fantasy in the book fit well with the energy of genre-centric 80s childhood nostalgia, the inspiration for this particular album.
