Matthews’ book revolves around Kirra, a curious and agile girl who lives in an idyllic community inside a dormant volcano. She and her father are the only two people who can go outside of the volcano, and Kirra is set to become a Storyteller like her father. One day, after hearing stories of strangers called “Takers,” Kirra ventures out of the volcano to find her own version of the story, but accidentally brings them back to her home inside the volcano and is robbed. Kirra is then adopted into a family that lives high up in the trees of a forest, but the Takers come back. Kirra is responsible for summoning all her storytelling that weaves her life together in order to save the tree people.
