BBC reports that the student from Glasgow University is the new curator of a series of letters that were written and sent over a century ago. ‘Letters from A Prisoner of War 1918‘ is the Instagram account where the written correspondence between Professor Archibald Allan Bowman and his wife Mabel is posted. While Bowman was a second lieutenant and then prisoner of WWI, him and his wife wrote each other from April to November 1918.

 

There are beautiful and touching sentiments expressed in the letters… It also shows the vital role, those on the home front had in providing prisoners of war with food and provisions parcels to keep them feed and clothed in the camps.. In this project, as well as putting them into chronological order, I also have tried to highlight how the letters were impacted by the war.

Although all the letters will be published over a long period of time to make the reader understand the agony of waiting, not all of the letters are fully readable. Due to censorship many were written over in black ink, had parts cut out, or sent out of order and over long gaps of time. Each exchange was either in English or German.

Tony Pollard, an archaeology and conflict history professor explained the importance of these letters being released to public eyes.
 
As a conflict historian, this is a remarkable insight into wartime Britain… They transport us back in time to see what ordinary people had to deal with both at home and on the front line during the First World War… This student research project also helps to bring a new understanding to the documents, showcasing the letters as historical objects which tell their own special story of war censorship.
