Lauren Oliver’s novel Replica is a sci-fi story about a woman named Lyra, who has been locked away in a research facility while being labeled “24”. After an attack on the facility, Lyra escapes. She then encounters a woman named Gemma, who is investigating her family’s connection to the place Lyra was locked up in and both women get involved in a conspiracy that will change both of their lives.
It is yet another epic YA sci-fi novel getting the feature film treatment. This time, it comes from the team behind Netflix’s adaptation of To All The Boys I Loved Before.
Producer Matt Kaplan and his production company ACE Entertainment is teaming up with director Michael Filmognari, the director of the latter film’s upcoming sequel, to bring Replica to the big screen. Production is set to begin in early 2020. There is no word yet on whether the film will premiere on Netflix or in theaters.
Kaplan had nothing but high praise for Oliver’s novel:
“Lauren’s beautiful coming-of-age story about what it means to be human resonated with YA audiences across the globe, and blending this narrative with Michael’s experience in the genre space is exactly what we want to be doing at ACE. We are excited to explore the ideas and themes that young people relate to and I can’t think of better people to tell this story with.”
