The 2016 film Arrival stars Amy Adams as a linguist who is recruited by the government to translate alien messages after several spacecrafts mysteriously land on Earth. The film was adapted from a short story titled Story of Your Life by Ted Chang. The film went on to receive critical acclaim and box office success, and was nominated for several Academy Awards.
The producers behind that film, 21 Laps Entertainment and FilmNation, are teaming up again to adapt another sci-fi short story to the big screen: Ken Liu’s The Message. The short story first appeared in Interzone magazine and was released in 2012.
The Message follows an archaeologist who travels to distant planets to preserve the legacy of forgotten civilizations. He is joined by his daughter whom he never knew existed prior to the story. When they travel through a series of mysterious ruins, they discover secrets about themselves as well as revelations that could change the universe.
