Twitter Honors ‘The Hate U Give’ Author With #AngieThomasAppreciationDay

Yesterday, Twitter honored The Hate U Give author Angie Thomas with the hashtag #AngieThomasAppreciationDay. The hashtag arose after Kian Lawley, an actor cast in the upcoming adaptation of Thomas’s New York Times bestselling novel, was filmed spewing racial slurs including the n-word. The Hate U Give follows Starr, a teenage girl who witnesses the shooting of her unarmed best friend by a police officer. The book is inspired by the many incidents of police brutality against people of color in the United States, such as the deaths of Tamir Rice, Eric Garner and Sandra Bland, among many, many others.
