Our favorite screwed-up superheroes are back!

I know I can’t be the only one wondering how the current pandemic might affect, and potentially delay, the filming of our favorite TV series. Lucky for us though, Netflix’s Umbrella Academy is one show we won’t have to worry about; Netflix has just announced the second season of their beloved superhero show will drop July 31.

Umbrella Academy, based on the comics by Gerard Way, follows seven extraordinary kids who were adopted by millionaire Reginald Hargreeves and trained from a young age to save the world. Each of the kids, as well as 36 others, were mysteriously born to women who had previously shown no signs of pregnancy. The Umbrella Academy children disbanded a decade ago, but are reunited after the death of their adoptive father. The now-adults are all struggling with their own demons while coming to grips with the past as they return to their childhood home and must suddenly save the world once more.

If you haven’t seen the first season, we highly recommend it! If you’re looking to avoid spoilers, now’s the time to scurry along as we dissect the end of season one!

After an explosive season finale, there certainly seems to be a great deal in store for us in season two. In case you forgot, let us clear the cobwebs for you:

After going total darkside, enraged by memories of her tragic childhood and suppressed powers, Vanya brings down the Umbrella Academy building, killing Pogo in her rampage. Her five adoptive siblings manage to escape and regroup. They find Vanya performing at a theater, where she attempts to use the sonic sound of the violin to bring about the end of the world. Luckily, the others manage to stop her–but, instead of killing her, Allison shoots past Vanya’s ear and knocks her unconscious.

But it seems they were still too late. The sonic sounds Vanya generated shot a beam into space, splintering the moon and sending rocks hurtling towards Earth. The episode ends as Five sends his siblings–including Vanya–into a time jump with him. Where they’ve gone? We don’t know.

It’ll be interesting to see how the group deals with the consequences of Vanya’s actions, and whether everyone will be as forgiving as Allison. What I would most like to know is how exactly they plan to save the world, though I suspect it will involve a whole lot of time jumps–and I am all here for it!

Also: Will we finally find out how Ben died???

You can dive deeper into the Umbrella Academy world by checking out the original comics, available on Amazon. Since the 2019 release of the Netflix original, Gerard Way (Am I the only one who just realized he’s part of My Chemical Romance?) has resurrected the comic series with The Umbrella Academy Volume 3: Hotel Oblivion

While the first season is pretty consistent with the comics, its finale deviates drastically. It’ll be interesting to see what direction they take the second season, and how much they draw from the comics!
