While Wonder Woman is out kicking butt and saving lives on the silver screen, an organization of women writers is making sure that her lasso of truth reaches young women learning how to be their own kind of superheroes.

On May 31st, the Legion of Women Writers, an advocacy group for women in the media and entertainment industries, started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to send 70 high school-age girls to see Wonder Woman—the first big-budget superhero film directed by a woman, Patty Jenkins—in theaters. Co-leading the effort was the NYC branch of Girls, Inc., a nonprofit that focuses on the education and empowerment of young women. “Wonder Woman has been a cultural icon since her creation in 1942, and symbol to girls and boys that a woman can be strong, bold, and compassionate,” the GoFundMe page stated. “Your donation will help cover movie tickets and popcorn for the girls.”

Though their initial fundraising goal was $1,200, the campaign quickly surpassed that limit; as of today, donors have raised over $7,496 for Girls Inc. of NYC. All extra cash will be funneled into their annual College Shower for incoming freshmen.
