New Year’s Resolutions are hard. We all know that. We also all know how lovely it would be if we could read more. But, alas, we don’t have the time. We have to watch the new Netflix show. We have to binge conspiracy theory videos on YouTube for four hours. If you are looking to get back into literature, but cannot be bothered with a generalized resolution that will definitely be broken, here are five more specific and more attainable resolutions for book lovers.
1. Find a New Genre

Rather than vowing to read more, vow to read more of a certain type of book. Whether they are graphic novels, mysteries, or romance, this specificity immediately makes the resolution more achievable. Now, if you manage to read only one book from a new genre this year, you will have succeeded. And you may discover a new favorite kind of book in the process!
2. Visit a New Bookstore

Buying books is never the problem. Reading them, however, is a different story. If you are a master browser, turn your resolution into visiting as many new bookstores you can in the coming year. The pressure to read is alleviated and instead, you have an excuse to peruse your heart out. This is a great way to explore hidden gems and support local bookstores. This is also a perfect resolution for an avid traveler looking to explore local bookstores on their upcoming trips.
3. Try an Alternate Mode of Reading

There is more than one way to absorb literature. This resolution could mean investing in an e-reader or buying an Audible subscription. You just may discover a new favorite way to read and fulfill that resolution to read more after all.
4. Get the Bookshelf of Your Dreams

Another common resolution that is too broad and unattainable is getting organized. Instead, focus on one aspect of your life: your bookshelf. This could mean splurging on a new Ikea bookshelf, donating old reads or color coordinating your novels. This makes your collection more appealing and inviting.
5. Set a Goodreads Goal

Making a Goodreads account is a good resolution on its own. Tracking, rating and reviewing your books is a great resolution for keeping track of what you read and getting recommendations from friends and family. If you still are set on reading more, Goodreads is a great platform for attaining it. Set a reasonable goal—you can always adjust it later—and use that as motivation to get reading. If this seems too big, set weekly or monthly goals for a certain page count or number of chapters to be read in a period of time. Breaking up large goals ensures success.
Happy New Year and happy reading!
