1. The Bright Lands by John Fram

The Bright Lands tells the story of Joel Whitley, who was run out of his hometown of Texas for being gay, but is brought back when his younger brother, Dylan the star quarterback, goes missing. When he returns, he teams up with Starsha Clark, the Sheriff’s Deputy, who has painful memories of Joel, to find Dylan and get answers for her missing brother as well. In the high school, friends of Dylan believe there is more to the story than their classmates are willing to share, while Starsha and Joel try to uncover town secrets. Uncovering these secrets will bring to light some crimes, that the men who committed them will stop at nothing to hide. Now everyone’s nightmares about the urban legend of the bright lands just might be coming to haunt the town.

 

 

2. The Suicide House by Charlie Bronlea

The Suicide House follows the story of Rory and Lane, students at Westmont Prepatory High School, and the hosts of the school’s podcast. The podcast chronicles the murders of the two students a year previous in the suicide house, which used to be the designated party house. The survivors of that horrific night all returned to kill themselves in the same house. One of the teachers was found guilty of the crime but Rory believes there is something sinister within the school. Rory and Lane work together to recreate the night of the murders and to dig deeper into what really happened, and as they continue to dig into the mystery, they discover the game within the school is still very much alive and the players might not be able to win or survive.

 

3. His and Hers by Alice Feeny

His and Hers tells the story of Jack Harper and Anna Andrews, who are uncovering a murder in Blacktown, and both of them know the victim. Anna is working hard to land her dream job as TV presenter, so even though she’s hesitant to return to her hometown to cover a murder, she goes and learns that the victim is her old childhood friend and she’s just not covering it, she’s at the center of it. Jack is from London, and never imagined himself working in a place like Blacktown, but he is and winds up one of the suspects in his own investigation, because he knew the victim. Now, who is telling the truth? Jack or Anna, someone isn’t being honest and both of them know more than they are willing to share.

 

 

4. The Safe Place by Anna Downes

The Safe Place follows Emily and Scott. Emily lost her apartment, her job and her acting agent all in one day, so when she meets Scott, a successful CEO, she accepts his offer to be his housekeeper at his estate. Emily soon becomes acquainted with Scott, his wife Nina, and their daughter, but eventually Emily soon learns that Scott and Nina are hiding secrets, and if she doesn’t go along with them the consequences could be dangerously deadly.

 

5. Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay

Survivor Song tells the story of Natalie, who lives in Massachusetts, where a deadly virus is taking over. The virus is spread through salivia, and once you are bitten you lose your mind and are driven to infect people. People are under quarantine, have a curfew to stop the spread, and people are going crazy. The government can barely hold it together. Natalie is eight months pregnant and her husband was just killed by their neighbor who bit him. Natalie tried to save him, but she ended up getting bitten herself and now she’s rushed to the hospital. She reaches out to Ram, her friend who is also a doctor and they end up in a landscape filled with tons of dangerous creatures that push them to the brink.
