The Canadian author is the first to contribute to a project called the “Future Library”. The idea behind the Future Library is to preserve work from some of the greatest authors of our time and to seal it in a time capsule, which will be opened in the year 2114.
The project is run from Oslo, Norway, where the selected writings will be held in trust in a special room in the Deichman Library. Atwood went to Oslo in person to deliver her manuscript, and she marked the occasion by uploading an essay about the project to the story-sharing app Wattpad. She also announced a writing contest called “Dear 2114,” asking her readers to write their own piece about the future. Winners for the contest will be announced in June.
As for the content of Atwood’s time capsule contribution, she’s not giving anything away. “My mouth is zipped tight,” Atwood told CBC.
