Netflix’s newest movie ‘Fatherhood‘ starring Kevin Hart is the adaptation of Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love by Matthew Logelin. The story about a widowed father and his newborn daughter, Fatherhood was re-written not only to tell the touching story of the author but to give the view from a different perspective, that of a person of color.
Here are 4 reasons why you should watch the movie:
-
- Netflix did an excellent job at maintaining the major points of the plot. We all know how Hollywood works, they love drama, so when a book is adapted to a movie, many readers are worried about how much will be lost in “translation.” It’s a fair fear to deal with, especially if the book meant a lot to you as a reader and you saw yourself in the characters. However, this isn’t something to be worried about for this movie. Though there were some changes to the minor plot points to make the movie more streamlined and easy to follow, Netflix did an amazing job at maintaining the overlying theme of love, loss, and finding joy in life again that the book portrays.
- The movie is just as touching as the book. If you read the book, you might remember crying a lot (don’t lie, I did too). Worry not my fellow readers, the movie is just as touching. As we all know, Kevin Hart, starring in the protagonist’s role, is usually a funny actor that doesn’t usually do this kind of storyline. This gives us two perks: 1. we get some funny scenes that make us laugh through the tears, and 2. we get to see a whole new side of him as an actor.

As mentioned above, Kevin Hart is known as being the comic in the movies he plays in, so seeing him in such a deep movie might initially be weird. BUT, he read the screenplay for the adaptation and decided he wanted to take the role and do the movie. Logelin states in his interview with Bookstr here, that the actor will make you cry through his acting abilities and his ability to portray the universality of the experience he went through. As someone who read the book and watched the movie, I can agree wholeheartedly.
- Logelin loves Melody Hurd’s portrayal of his daughter Maddy. The young actress does a sweet and sassy job at portraying Madeline and Logelin believes she will be “the biggest star any of you have ever heard of at some point.” She brings so much light and joy to the movie even through the sad theme of death that changes the entire tone of the movie.
